No, that's not a typo. At least not on my part. Though the label name, Special Potato, has no "e" at the end of it, the album title does. And who are you to question their liberal spelling practices? I mean, it's not like you're the fucking Spelling Bee Master of the Universe. And if you are, you're probably not getting half the play these cats get. "These cats" being The Slackers. The Slackers being my favorite band.
This is Special Potatoe Volume 1 is a compilation they assembled to showcase the medicine cabinet of musical talent they have on their very own label. MUSIC. Not spelling. They may never get jobs as professional proofreaders, but who the fuck cares? They can make an entire room of guys and gals shake their asses 'til the sun comes up. And if you ask me, that's way cooler than knowing how many "h"s are in the word “Chihuahua.”
The bulk of the material comes from the Slacker archives. Stuff from The Nods and Sic-n-Mad, and from front man Vic Ruggiero's out-of-print, Dylan-esque solo album, Living in Sin/Understanding New Jersey. Ruggiero does offer up one previously unreleased solo gem, called "Time", which rests nicely atop the crown that is the small handful of other previously unreleased tunes. Like "I Said", a hilarious jazz number from David Hillyard and his Rocksteady Seven troops, which finds Hepcats Alex Desert and Greg Lee chatting about women with the aloof wisdom of Vince Vaughn's character in Swingers. And the Slackers own "When I Find A Place Where I Belong", which kinda makes you sad like the opening paragraph of part two, chapter eight in Kerouac's On the Road.
But the clincher for me is the live version of "Dub TOO", a song from their last album. You can't sit still or stay quiet during this. Rev. Q-MAXX steps up to the mic, preaching like a dancehall Deacon, and trombonist Glen Pine flexes his golden pipes in place of the absent Mush One. And it's a nice little teaser for a forthcoming Slackers documentary! That’s right. I said "documentary." Let’s see you spelling bee queens have a film made about your boring asses.
