Every once in a while you see a trailer so perfect you just have to seek out the film. Such is the case when I saw the preview for the 1965 lost cult classic Incubus. The blurbs "Thrill to the horror of Satanic Ritual!" and "Tingle with excitement at the Succubi Sisters!" had sold me on the flick. Then came the coup de gras: "Look on in bewilderment as William Shatner speaks in tongues!" I stopped the film I was watching and returned to the video store. Incubus had to be mine! Incubus is the only feature filmed entirely in the language of Esperanto (a language made up of Latin, German, Spanish, French, and English) created so the whole world could communicate. It never caught on, and the film bombed. The film is reported to be cursed, and there are some strange occurrences that surround Incubus, such as:
1. All but one print of the film was destroyed, and it was lost in France.
2. The director's production company went bankrupt.
3. The actor who played the Incubus, Milos Milos, killed Mickey Rooney's estranged wife and committed suicide.
4. Actress Ann Atmar, who played Shatner's sister, committed suicide a few weeks after the film wrapped.
5. Eloise Hardt, who played one of the Succubi sisters, had her daughter kidnapped and murdered.
6. Shatner's wife drowned.
7. Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate attended the movie's premiere. Polanski is currently dodging extradition overseas for the statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl, and Tate was a victim of the Manson Family.

Once you get past all the history, Incubus proves to be quite entertaining, along the lines of Carnival of the Souls or Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. The cinematography is excellent and recalls Ingmar Bergman at times. There are some downright creepy scenes of Succubi women drowning men, people being attacked by goats, and, of course, The Shatner. In all his overacting glory, Shatner makes the movie worth watching. Watch him perfect,.. his,.. STYLE, of speaking before his Star Trek days. Watch him battle hot Succubi women. Watch him in Incubus. You won't be sorry.
