Sometime after Antichrist Superstar, I lost touch with Marilyn Manson. I had been a huge fan, starting with a promo I got of Portrait of an American Family while working at a record store. I can still remember the look on people\'s faces when I tried to describe what Marilyn Manson was. Just a short time later, they were a household name. Antichrist was a disc that lasted almost a whole year in my CD player. But after Mechanical Animals, I lost interest. The album just didn\'t do much for me, and the songs I heard from Holy Wood didn\'t open my wallet, either. But their was something about the new MM disc that I just knew was going to be different and better. I could feel Marilyn Manson coming back.
I was right.
The Golden Age of Grotesque finds Manson refocused, and more dangerous than ever. After telling us on the opening track, \"This Is The New Shit\", \"Everything has been said before / There\'s nothing left to say anymore / When it\'s all the same / You can ask for it by name\", we know Manson has something that other musicians do not: self-awareness. He knows where he\'s been, and what people perceive his place in music to be. And he\'s saying \"fuck you\" to them all. He was never here strictly to scare parents. He\'s here because he wants to be; and because he has something to say. On \"Vodevil\" he let\'s you know it: \"I\'m not ashamed you\'re entertained / But I\'m not a puppet / I\'m a grenade\".
With the departure of original member Twiggy Ramirez, many people saw it a sign of end times for MM. But he found an amazing replacement. Filling out bass duties and co-producing Golden Age is the brilliant Tim Skold, the savior of KMFDM/MDFMK, and former leader of one of the most under-appreciated bands ever: Shotgun Messiah. With Skold onboard, the songs are catchier, tighter, more focused, and absolutely twisted.
The frightening edge honed on Antichrist Superstar is back, and Manson is free to push himself out further than ever before, because M.W. Gacy, Ginger Fish, John 5 and Tim Skold have created a powerful foundation. Alliterative chanting choruses percuss across thumping beats and vicious twisted guitars, while Marilyn pounds it home: \"This isn\'t music and we\'re not a band / We\'re five middle fingers on a motherfucking hand\". It\'s a pimp hand of middle fingers, and his pimp hand is strong!
It is a new age for Marilyn Manson, and I am glad to be a part of it once again.
