The sound of gunfire and artillery laced with soothing vocals,... A rhythmic tribal folk-song that rails hard into percussion-heavy rock beats,... Ambient patterns bursting with explosions of drum and bass,... That\'s how I\'d describe Serart, a collaboration between System of a Down\'s lead singer, Serj Tankian, and prolific folk-musician, Arto Tunc Boyaciyan. Layered beyond belief, Serart is a tumultuous ride of self-expression, effortlessly bridging cultural and musical gaps. It\'s a crashing rumble of drum and bass, interwoven with soft, reflective piano notes. Arto\'s haunting vocals are complemented by the trademark guttural roar and spoken word of Serj. Sopping wet with the grounded energy of Middle Eastern and Pan-African folk songs, it still manages to flow over with the raw power of a modern rock/noise album. The natural and acoustic notes here are crossbred with an electronic buzz, and the results are something akin to Damon Albarn\'s Mali Music,.. unbelievable. And, of course, Serart is tinged with a note of social consciousness. Especially considering that it\'s a virtual collision of things that are, literally, worlds apart. But, despite any urge to wax intellectual about what\'s happening with the music, or how it reflects the world around us, you never feel bogged down in the message. In the end, it\'s a thoughtful work of art, as well as a horribly fun listen. For more, go to serart.net.
