I wish I knew what "kosher" meant. I’m not Jewish, but I’ve heard Jewish folks talk about "kosher" things from time to time. From what I’ve gathered, it means that something is allowed, or follows guidelines for being okay. I’m not really sure.
Anyway, the label responsible for releasing Offcell, a five-track EP from the SoCal duet known as Pinback, is called Absolutely Kosher Records. That’s why I was wondering. So, if you’re a Jew, chances are you’re allowed to listen to this album on the Sabbath or what have you.
If you’re not Jewish, don’t worry. Pinback’s 30-minute EP is just dandy and sweet. Offcell has that dreamy song quality that will have art school girls and sexually-confused boys swooning, swaying, and holding themselves tight.
For the most part, I shy away from buying EPs, because they're usually marked up to regular LP price, but you get half the tracks. Bummer. However, the length of Offcell makes up for this.
There are two drawbacks to Pinback’s EP. First, the drums get a bit too synthetic, and the overall elements can come off as a bit too programmed. (I’m a fan of analog myself.) Second, the front man’s name, Armistead Burwell Smith the IV, is obnoxious.
Other than that little nitpicky piece, it's a sweet listen. Get more info at absolutelykosher.com.
