Even comic book fans get busy in the summertime. Longer daylight hours mean more time in the basement alphabetizing our collections. You know, more time for the stuff that really matters,.. like reading and filing.
Occasionally, we are forced to take a break and venture into the fresh air. It's truly an amazing time for comic fans, as our beloved characters are showing up everywhere. A quick visit to the local movie theater offered Hulk. While reviews for the film have been mixed, I liked it. Well, I liked the Hulk parts. I thought the movie itself was too long. But every scene that showed the Hulk featured everything I could have asked for. And that's saying a lot, since the Green Goliath is a character I've grown up with since I was seven. I get a little tired of Hollywood changing established superhero origins because they "know better" than dumb ol' me. But, I didn't mind it that much, because the Hulk parts are really incredible. (Sorry.)
That makes it three-for-three this year for Marvel movies, after Daredevil and X-Men 2. Next up (for comic movies) is League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Most of the audience won't realize that this concept is from the excellent Alan Moore mini-series from ABC/Wildstorm. I recommend the comic very highly.
On the way home from the theater, I stop at Barnes & Noble and check out their ever-growing trade paperback section. They are even offering a CrossGen Comics promotion of buy two, get one free through August 14th. I continue to recommend CrossGen as an alternative to the superhero universes of Marvel or DC Comics.
I arrive home, flip on the TV, and am amazed at how much is on for a comic book fan. Cartoon Network offers "Justice Saturday" on July 5th, with two new Justice League episodes. And all of this comes after showing a block of Superman versus Darkseid classics! On July 19th, Teen Titans premieres. Check out teentitans.com for more info.
On MTV, the long-awaited Spider-Man animated show begins on July 11th. On Spike (Lee) TV,.. er, I mean, TNN, Stan (Not Spike) Lee gives us "grown-ups" his latest creation: Stripperella. A stripper who moonlights in the actual moonlight as a superhero, with all the double entendres you can cram into a push-up bra. Don't laugh. Here's, finally, something (sorta) superheroic that my dad will watch.
And, finally, ending on a serious and positive note, the History Channel just gave us Comic Book Superheros Unmasked. Two hours of the history of the genre that's closest to my heart. It was very well done. It presented a lot of information in a way that should interest any audience. Watch for repeat airings, or order the DVD from historychannel.com.
Wow. Movies, TV, and shilling for a major chain bookstore. I better get outta this sunlight and back in the basement. But, like I always say: don't forget the source material. Read some comics. Please.
