Rock 'n' roll dance bands aren't hard to come by these days. Yet I still had the desire to check out The Rapture when they came through Chicago on November 6th, because I missed seeing them in their early days at a basement show in Milwaukee.
Over the years, they seem to have turned into a one-hit wonder band. They even sold t-shirts with the lyrics to the song everyone knows printed on the side of the torso. Be that as it may, the crowd danced just as much to every song as they did to their hit, "Out Of The Races And On To The Tracks".
Their sincere energy was refreshing, and they were really into performing for their crowd. I especially enjoyed their songs that used an actual living drummer, instead of programmed beats. Live music is best when musicians outwardly prove that they are having fun doing what they are doing.
This is all in contrast to the opening bands. VHS Or Beta, who I was told I'd like, bored me. Music shouldn't be about fashion. It should be a soul-touching experience-- something to make you feel alive. When the band doesn't even get into their own creation, it makes little sense for me to get into it. Although, there needs to be a healthy balance between creating seriously good music and having fun playing. Gil Mantera's Party Dream played after VHS Or Beta, and they were simply a gimmicky performance. I've seen too many shock bands by now to even laugh at their bare white asses shaking in my face.
