When you were a kid did you ever wonder what your parents did when they went to work? Did they just sit behind a desk all day? Or maybe they saved the world from evil domination. That’s the premise for the new Dimension Films kid flick, Spy Kids, written and directed by indie-film star, Robert Rodriguez. That’s right, the same Robert Rodriguez that brought you El Mariachi, Desperado and From Dusk ‘til Dawn. But Rodriguez has done some of his best work with kids. His first short film, titled Bedhead, starred his niece and nephew and proved to be ground-breaking for the young director. You may also recall his segment in the film Four Rooms titled “The Misbehavors”, hands down the best part of the film. Rodriguez came up the idea for Spy Kids while working on Four Rooms. He kept working on the script while continuing other projects like From Dusk ‘til Dawn. He penned a deal with Miramax Films that gave him a budget for Spy Kids. In return, he agreed to direct Kevin Williamson’s The Faculty. It proved to be a good deal for Rodriguez, seeing how the budget for Spy Kids was an eye-popping $36 million. Not bad for a guy who started with a budget of $7,000 for El Mariachi. Spy Kids may not have been my cup of tea, but kids will love it. Likewise, if you are a fan of Rodriguez’s films, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. There’s plenty of action and humor for everyone.
