VICTOR RICE - VICTOR RICE IN AMERICA
cd review by vinnie in milwaukee

Sometimes you can’t explain why you like certain things, certain records. You just know that they’re beautiful. You listen to them, and get totally lost in them. Your world gets walled in by what’s coming out of your speakers, and nothing can break your concentration. Ten minutes after the record has ended, you realize it’s over. You snap out of your little coma, and start it again, because you like where it takes you.

For me, that’s Kind of Blue or Endtroducing.... Those are two records I easily disappear into every single time I listen. Those albums hit all the right nerves in me, and I can’t explain why. But they’re proof positive that the only god worth worshipping is music. And, on my shelf, I’ve cleared a space for Victor Rice in America to rest between them.

I can’t even begin to scientifically break this down and point out what makes it so good. It just is. Christ,.. “Fique” alone has permanently nestled its way into my head. I hear it in my sleep, when I walk, when I least expect it. I couldn’t have asked for a better intruder.

This is more than musicians making music. This is musicians building a brand-new world around every set of ears that hears it, with a magician named Victor at the helm. It’s a rare, beautiful thing to me, and I’d love for every single person who reads this to check it out, even if it doesn’t wind up next to your Kind of Blue or Endtroducing....
