The moody Icelandic band known as Sigur Ros is coming to the Wexner Center on November 7, just in time for the transition from fall into winter. The music of Sigur Ros (which translates to “victory rose”) is like a landscape of fresh virgin snow-- beautiful, lush, and haunting-- perfect for this time of year. After their last album, the brilliant Agaetis Byrjun (Icelandic for “a good start”) broke through, Sigur Ros found themselves the favorite band of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. Their song “Svefn G Englar” was used on the TV show CSI during sweeps, and they were asked to contribute a new song to the soundtrack of Vanilla Sky, which appears on their new disc, titled (). (Have they learned nothing from Prince?) () is more raw and concerned with dynamics than Agaetis Byrjun, but still contains singer Jonsi’s trademark falsetto. The songs are once again sung in “hopelandic,” an invented, gibberish language where the voice is used as an instrument, and not for actual lyrical content. The message of Sigur Ros is the feeling and emotion of their music, which gets inside despite the language barrier. If you are a fan of experimental bands like Mogwai and Godspeed, this is a great show to check out, and a rare opportunity.
