Let me preface this rant by stating for the record that I am not a feminist. I've never burned a bra, and I rather enjoy it when a door is opened for me. My freshman roommate was a card-carrying feminist and, quite frankly, she bugged me. I'm what you'd call a humanist. Equality, blah, blah, blah. I'd also like to say that I am a big fan of Scooby-Doo and the whole gang. My recent thoughts were an epiphany that comes with age and watching cartoons in college. Damn maturity.
Having said that, on to my rant:
Okay, as a child, I realized that the mystery solving duties on Scooby-Doo were not always balanced. Shaggy and good ol’ Scooby were always off eating something, but once in a while they stumbled upon a carnival owner posing as a monster of some kind. And everyone has heard the tired theory about Fred and Daphne getting it on while everyone else did all the work. But my beef is with the two female characters on the show: Daphne and Velma. Why do the girls on Scooby-Doo have to be either smart or pretty, not both? Daphne giggles and feeds Scooby his precious Scooby Snacks, while Velma is searching for clues in those Coke-bottle glasses. (Side note: As a victim of those same Coke-bottle glasses, I always liked to think that Velma was just going through an awkward phase, and later got contacts.) Why couldn't they have made Velma more attractive while solving mysteries? Those orange knee socks have got to go. Or why couldn't they have made Daphne have a slight weight problem, because apparently all she did was sit on her ass in the Mystery Machine.
All I'm saying is that women are capable of being intelligent and sexy, and it saddens me to realize that one of my favorite childhood shows didn't support that idea. Sigh. But I still love those meddling kids.
