After seeing George Clooney’s outstanding directorial debut, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, it was clear to me that this movie reviewer had a little confessing of his own to do. First of all, this is all in thanks to Sam Rockwell’s marvelously real portrayal of The Gong Show host Chuck Barris; which makes me feel that now, I too can come clean. For over the last five years you have all known me as Darby O’Gill, staff writer here at tastes like chicken. But what you don’t know is that over 20 years ago, I too had something in common with The Gong Show host Chuck Barris. What you ask? Well, let’s just say that the fact that we both lived double lives is just the tip of the iceberg. What I’m about to confess will shake the very foundation that comedy, as you know it, is based on. Now please keep in mind that I didn’t have the luxury of having someone as truly gifted and talented as Charlie Kaufman to do the adaptation of my story (which he is most masterful at these days). And I also didn’t have the honor of having such a free-spirited girlfriend like Drew Barrymore. But I digress. The thing that Barris and I did have in common is the fact that we were both on The Gong Show together. God, I can’t believe I’m sharing this with you. But I feel I owe it to you, my readers, to finally come clean. I, Darby O’Gill, was the Unknown Comic. I know, I know. It’s a shock. I just can’t believe that no one ever figured it out. I mean, come on. I took off the paper bag, and just replaced it with a pint of Guinness. I thought it was a dead giveaway, but no one seemed to catch it. Wow! You, know what? This feels good! You have no idea how good this feels! It’s like a weight has been lifted. Boy, I should really tell the truth more often.
