Ever since I saw the first Star Wars movie in the theater I wanted to be Luke Skywalker. All I needed was an official lightsaber. At the time it was little more than an oversized plastic tube that made noise if you whipped it really hard, and was deemed too dangerous by my mother. But she would not keep me from the Jedi order,.. from my destiny. The next logical step: tear the legs off of my sister's play table instead. After placing some of those fancy blue, round, stackable rings around the pole, I finally had my beautiful testament to everything pure and good. Oh, what adventures I had-- for about ten minutes. My mother confiscated it and beat me for a week. It was worth it, but that aluminum table leg still wasn't the real thing.
Finally, over 20 years later, my dreams have been answered by a small company called Master Replicas. They are a new company that makes exact replicas of different movie props, starting with Star Wars. In the process, they have also achieved the impossible dream: a realistic looking lightsaber. The replica is based on Anakin's lightsaber from Episode 2. It’s pretty damn neat, even at first glance. It was created with a shiny metal hilt, with all the small touches from the original. The real gem of this piece is the four-foot tall, clear acrylic blade. Inside the tubular blade is a paper coated with an electro-luminescent chemical. When you hit the ignition switch, the whole thing glows incredibly bright with absolute consistency. If that wasn't enough, They built a pretty strong speaker into the hilt that plays sounds recorded directly from the movie.
It even changes pitch and has crashing sounds when you move it around.
Exactly how accurate is it? Enough to get me to run around and release the pent up Jedi buried deep within my soul. I couldn't contain myself. After an hour of chasing cars and scaring pedestrians, I knew that my life would be forever changed. This is an absolute must have for any true Star Wars fan. It retails for around $120, but is more than worth it. The only place to get one is online at masterreplicas.com, or a few other online retailers. While you're there you should check out some of their other fine items.
