Once upon a time, there was a band called Count The Stars. And they had a shiny new album that came out on Victory Records. That album was Never Be Taken Alive, and all the children of the Collegiate Kingdom adored it. They took it to friends’ houses and insisted on listening to track nine over and over, because it was just so \"awesome\". They’d play it in their car and sing along poorly. These rambunctious youths would even blare the album at full volume during parties in their overpriced student/tenement housing, at the risk of waking their elderly neighbors, and drawing the attention of peace officers. The music was that sweet. Yes, the children of the Kingdom rocked out, indeed, and all was good.
That’s what Count The Stars’ new album is like. It’s pretty universal, poppy-punk-rock music that I’m sure a lot of people will probably enjoy. Honestly, it’s not my cup of tea. Not because these guys aren’t good musicians, but because I’ve heard this all before. Same old, same old. There’s nothing unique going on with this band that isn’t going on with a thousand other bands that are churning out tunes about girls, life, and finding out who you are. Like I said, I’m sure this is gonna make a lot of folks’ CD collections that much more meaningful. But I’m going to have to pass.
