Musically, I\'ve always been a big fan of,.. (How should I put this?) whiney, white guy, alternative rock stuff. The early to mid-Nineties were a great time for this music, as Nirvana/Soundgarden/Shithouse McTitties grunge evolved (or devolved) on the radio into the likes of Better Than Ezra/Semisonic/Nada Surf. I liked \'em all. Still do. Am I proud? Eh,... But it\'s true.
So, Nada Surf had a mainstream radio/MTV hit called \"Popular\" from their album High/Low seven years ago. It told the tale of some slutty high school girl who does a bunch of football players (who also happen to check each other out in the showers) after practice. At least that\'s what I got from the music video. Oh, and there\'s a lyric about keeping your hair \"spotless and clean\" by washing it \"at least once every two weeks.\" What the hell? Listen to the song. You can borrow it from me if you want another listen. Once every two weeks? That\'d get itchy.
But I liked the song well enough to buy the CD, and even see them at the Newport back in the day. The bassist wore orange pants, and flirted with my then-girlfriend after the show. That\'s all I remember about it. Wait,.. she flirted with him, too! Fuck!
So by now you\'re wondering why I\'m not writing about the new album, entitled Let Go, and only focusing on their one hit from, like, 1996 or some shit. Well, according to their press release, their career was \"both highlighted and hampered\" by \"Popular\". I can understand that. Like David Hasselhoff with Knight Rider,.. until Baywatch came along. But this new album doesn\'t have a Baywatch to go with Knight Rider, if you know what I\'m saying. Sure, it\'s gotten some good reviews, and it\'s a pleasant collection of little ditties. But, none stand out. I don\'t know any of the song titles, nor do I feel the need to.
The boys of Nada Surf are talented in their own way, and can make easy listening, alt-rock, mid-tempo music. It\'s not a bad thing, really. Nice background music. Something to listen to while you\'re sitting at home alone because you\'re a shy, whiney, pale-as-fuck, alt-rock fan type. Nothing more, nothing less.
