One of my all-time favorite NOFX songs is a tune called “Falling In Love”. Sounds like a love song, right? And we all know how, in print, I tend to cringe at the presence of such things. But this NOFX tune is brilliant. The song is taking place on an airplane that is plummeting towards the ground below. Everyone’s about to be disaster toast. But, this man on the plane is professing his love to his love seated next to him. They die together, and the music sets the chaotic tone.
That's a love tune I can wrap my cynical ears around.
So, does it make me a walking contradiction if I like The Bouncing Souls' new record? I mean, it’s got some of those poppy-type “here are my feelings” songs that generally make me roll my eyes back into the overhead compartment. But it rocks! Not all the songs are like that. But even the ones that are, lean a little more toward the loud-fast-and-out-of-control sound that makes real punk so damn unappealing to Clear Channel.
This isn’t the kind of pop-smear “punk” your annoying 13-year-old neighbor girl listens to when she’s out at the mall buying some pre-ripped plaid pants and studs for her pleather jacket. That shit is relegated to the radio for a reason: Radio sucks ass.
Anchors Aweigh is the new record. And while they aren’t doing anything to my imagination like Fat Mike and Co. did with “Falling in Love”, they did have me repeating tunes on the stereo. Give it a listen. Gauge your opinion to mine. Know that tunes like “Apartment 5F”, “Better Days”, and “The Day I Turned My Back On You” have the sound I’m looking for. Make your comparison to that.
