This review is a little hard for me because it's about something I like. That's right! I actually liked something! Can you believe it? Me neither.
Anyway, The Last Minute is a surprisingly good movie by filmmaker Stephen Norrington (director of Blade and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen). It's a story of success and society,.. of how the world can be your best friend one minute, then eat you alive the next. It's a twisted fairy tale; the story of one man's fall from grace and subsequent journey into the unknown. It's about drugs. It's about relationships. It's about decisions. And most of all, it's about time.
From every frantic cut to each haunting slow-motion pan, the reoccurring theme of The Last Minute is how important and fleeting time-- and people-- can be. This key point, and the nightmarishly fast blend of editing and cinematography, is only enhanced by the pulsating soundtrack that accompanies it. Tunes from masterminds of thunderous electronic sound, like Leftfield, Aphex Twin, and El-P, crash and drop-kick the movie along. The already fast tempo of The Last Minute is amped up to Mach-7, then plunged down to snail-speed in a blink, all through a fine collaboration between the visuals and the music.
And, of course, there's the story. Even though it carries on at a frenzied pace, you hardly ever feel lost. The few times you are confused, you just keep watching and, eventually, everything makes sense. There isn't a second of this movie that's not relevant in some way, shape, or form. From the introduction of crucial characters to the random shot of anal fisting, every cog and element of The Last Minute serves to expand on the bizarre world that the equally fucked up ensemble exists in.
Oh, and I'm not gonna go into any scene-by-scene descriptions, but I will tell you this: There's a part of the movie that's like Oliver Twist on black tar heroin. Seriously, it's a group of grown men with machine guns, versus a gang of murderous children armed with knives, crowbars and a starved, shaved dog. Oops. I've already said too much. Check out thelastminutefilm.com and find out the rest for yourself.
