There are classic films within the realm of Freak Films. You know, those beautiful films that tell the tale of an innocent outcast. Those twisted, magical tales of a man/child lost in a world that is beyond their comprehension. Films like Edward Scissorhands and Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. (Yeah, I know they’re both Tim Burton movies, but what can I say? He’s a genius!) Films about childlike innocence and self-discovery that just live inside of you long after the DVD stops spinning.
What if I told you that there was a movie that came out just a few years ago that fits right into this subgenre of brilliance, and you probably missed it? It’s the first film by director Blair Hayes, and it’s called Bubble Boy. Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko) stars as Jimmy Livingston, a boy trapped in a bubble who has to travel across the country to stop Chloe, the love of his life, from getting married to a creep. Along the way, he meets a cult of happy-shiny people who worship Fabio, a freak show, a biker (Danny Trejo), and Verne Troyer (Mini Me).
It is touching, gut-burstingly funny, and offensive. Bubble Boy brings out the sap in me. The one that believes that love is worth taking a road trip across the country in a truck filled with curry-flavored ice cream for.
I know it’s a lot to believe that this movie could rank up there with those great early Tim Burton films, and maybe I’ve hyped it up too much. But from one freak to another, Bubble Boy is worth checking out.
