Listening to Angry Atom reminds me of my youth. Their music summons thoughts of a warm summer day full of similar melodies. The day I speak of is August 12th, 1986-- my first trip to the Ohio State Fair's livestock barn. The tune I am reminded of: the frantic baaing of countless sheep tethered to walls.
Yes, folks, Angry Atom's music has the same variety, pitch, and tempo as what echoes throughout a cinder block building full of sheep. All the off-key notes mush together like an animal farm symphony; so much so that I listened to the EP twice before realizing there were six songs on it, instead of it being just one long song. I'm led to believe that the lead singer of Angry Atom is one of the very same sheep I saw at the Fair so many years ago. But apparently life in the fair circuit has taken its toll, because I think he's become manic-depressive.
The first song talks about how his sheep-lady friend saved him from himself. (sniff, sniff) Next thing you know, he's gone and done her wrong. But guess what? He's sorry! He can't bare to lose her. After all, there's no one else in the barnyard that can compare to his precious she-sheep. I guess they worked it out, because he then baas on to let her know he's coming back home (from the 4-H show, no doubt) to "see her eyes". The next song describes being set free by love. I'm assuming it's about their weekend getaway to the spring meadow. In fact, it must have been one hell of a vacation, because the next two songs after that are about being free, too!
I really hope Atom the Sheep continues using his music to work through dysfunctional relationships. At the very least, the EP might give him an edge in the Sale of Champions.
Angry Atom? I'd be angry, too, if this music was the best I could do.
