Like a crack whore, I dove across the conference (coffee) table when Wayne began to describe what the band Spymob sounded like. Normally, Wayne says, \"I’ve got music to hand out.\" He will then hold up the CD, and say, \"This is ______, and they sound like ______.\" Typically, he will say something like \"retarded monkey poop\", or will compare them to other bands listed in the press kit as influences/sound-alikes. As he read down the list of comparisons, he mentioned Jellyfish. This is when the lunge occurred.
See, Jellyfish are one of the best bands that have ever existed, but they’re a little obscure. (How many of you have heard of them before now?) So, any band that:
A) knows who Jellyfish are, and
B) sites them as someone they want to be compared to, has got to be cool.
I am proud to announce that Spymob are, indeed, awesome! Spymob was the backing band for The Neptunes side project, N.E.R.D., but even that killer project could not prepare you for this disc. It’s power-pop at its finest, and, yes, it does bring to mind the greatness of Jellyfish. It’s also for fans of bands like Ben Folds, XTC, and Guster. In fact, the third track, \"I Still Live At Home\", sounds like \"One On One\" by Hall and Oates, as performed by Guster.
I highly recommend Sitting Around Keeping Score. It’s great fun, and the perfect poppy soundtrack for the summer. I do have one small problem with the album, though, and that is the title track. It’s not that I don’t like the song. It’s that the beginning sounds like an old song I can’t think of, and it’s driving me insane!!! The first person who can email me and tell me the name of that song will get a prize.
Now, go pick this disc up!
