Never mind the fact that Soul Coughing sold over a million records for Warner Bros. All of that is behind ex-lead singer Mike Doughty. He\'s got other things to concentrate on now, like touring with his new band.
Nearly four years after the breakup of Soul Coughing, Doughty has an acoustic album, a live album, and a six-song EP under his belt. In addition to that, he has put together a trio, known simply as Mike Doughty\'s Band, and is hitting the road this June for a 17-date tour that even includes a stop at Bonnaroo. Not bad for someone I feared would disappear.
That is not to say that I didn\'t have faith in him. Quite the opposite, actually. Everyone knows how the music business goes: bands fall apart, fans fall away, and, next thing you know, the ex-keyboardist from Journey is serving you a scoop of ice cream.
Thankfully, Doughty doesn\'t need to wear a paper hat to make a living.
So, what can we expect from this tour? Yeah, some old Soul Coughing tunes, for sure. But you can also expect a fair amount of songs from his solo debut, Skittish, as well as some numbers from his EP, 2003’s Rockity Roll. Mix all of that with some new material from their upcoming album (which is still shopping around for a label), and you’ve got one hell of a night.
Still not sold? Hop on over to Doughty’s site and order an album or two of his solo work, which was previously sold out. Luckily, these self-released gems are being reissued due to demand.
It’s true that Soul Coughing may be gone. But the spirit of the sound is still very much alive in Mike Doughty.
