So you’re hanging out in this crowded, run-down dive of a bar, drinking away another 9 to 5 nightmare. You holler for the barkeep to come top you off. After about the third round, you notice that the bartender is Megaman and, instead of an arm cannon, he’s sporting a high-end martini-blaster. Link and Zelda are making out in the corner, Pac-Man’s working the door, and King Koopa is on crowd control. Then, without warning, Pitfall Harry takes to the turntables and everybody starts dancing. You suddenly realize that you’re not in a dive bar at all. You’re in a blazing electronic construct; a living, breathing fiber-optic wet dream in the far reaches of an impossible landscape. That’s what I think of when I listen to Delphimini, the latest release from performance artist/DJ innovator, Jacoti Sommes. More than electronica, Delphimini is a 62-minute cross-training workout for your imagination. Right from the title track on in, the album rocks you smoothly between soft digital sounds and the jarring crash of rebellious hardware. While songs like “Robot Island” and “Toys” kick off bizarre mental journeys, pieces like “Singing Mimi (part II)” put your brain on its “chill” setting with 8-bit lounge music ease. Plus, in true endgame fashion, “Digital Eyes” ups the mysticism and manages to capture the feel of the entire album. With tight production and two kick ass hidden tracks, Delphimini is well worth the price of admission. To listen for yourself, contact Jacoti at MUCODUCO@yahoo.com.
