Coincidences galore: A few months ago, I reviewed Consequence\'s new mixtape-- an appetizer for his upcoming debut full-length, six years after his real deal debut on A Tribe Called Quest\'s (ATCQ) Beats, Rhymes And Life. ATCQ are part of a larger clique of groups known as The Native Tongues.
This month, I’m reviewing Truth Enola\'s debut full-length, which is coming six years after his debut on De La Soul\'s Stakes Is High. De La Soul are also part of that larger clique of groups known as The Native Tongues.
Therefore, I’m officially declaring 2004 \"Year of the Native Tongue Guest Emcee\". There are too many coincidences not to.
Like, for example, Phife Dawg (of the now-defunct ATCQ) makes an appearance on the fierce, punchy \"How It’s Gonna Be\", which is produced by Da Beatminerz\' Mr. Walt, who gets name-dropped on one ATCQ song that\'s escaping me. I wanna say \"Oh My God\", but I could be wrong. And De La Soul shows up not only to produce a cut (\"Exactly\"), but also to rekindle that Stakes Is High rhyme chemistry on the butter-smooth \"Voicetress\", courtesy of DJ Spinna and Joc Maxx.
Beyond all these Native Tongue coincidences, however, Truth makes his own mark. If MCs need a voice to be heard, count his right up there with Guru\'s and Method Man\'s as being tonally unique enough to grab your attention. His flow goes from casual (\"Everything Gonna Be Alright\", \"What Do I Do?\") to bouncing old school confidence (\"Throw It Down\", \"Here I Am\"), and the lyrics are more brick house than fluff.
So, since I’ve been waiting for this album for six long years, let me be the first to say, \"Go! Get it.\" If you grew up on that Native Tongue wave, or want something better than what M-T-Bling is giving you, seek out Truth.
