Warner Brothers Studios finally announced an October 3rd, 2003 release date for the long-awaited, live-action Beowulf movie. With Gary Goddard (Masters of the Universe) in the director’s chair, the film casts heartthrob Scott Baio in the title role, a stunning departure from his usual roles like “Chachi” Arcola on Happy Days.
On working with Goddard, Scott simply stated, “It’s not like Charles In Charge. Gary’s all about nipples! Nipples and cross-dressing ninja turtles.” Speaking of cross-dressers, Beowulf also stars John Ritter as the age-old hero’s nemesis, Grendel. “Honestly, it’s been a challenge for me,” says Ritter. “I don’t really have any lines, except for some growling and hissing. But I still found the character demanding in ways I’ve never encountered before.”
With credentials like Clifford The Big Red Dog (as the voice of Clifford), Wholly Moses (as Satan) and Your Aura Is Throbbing (enough said) under his belt, we’re sure Mr. Ritter did just fine. Despite the latest press release, Old English enthusiasts everywhere remain skeptical. After all, this film adaptation of the 9th Century epic tale has been in post-production for the past seven years.
