VINNIE: You know why David Byrne is so cool? Because he’s still a kid. A kid who makes the music that a child revolutionary would make. A little Ché Guevara strumming madness on a guitar. He made a packed house full of all walks of life sing and laugh and dance for a few hours. It seemed like we’d cheer for him for days, and at volumes far greater than any of us thought possible. I dug the mix of solo songs and Talking Heads’ songs. Especially “The Revolution,” “The Accident,” and “Once in a Lifetime.” If I could find a job, I’d buy his brand-new record.
WAYNE: David Byrne is entering his fourth decade of music making. As if that weren’t impressive enough, he is still making GOOD music. Touring in support of his newest album, Look Into The Eyeball, Byrne made a stop at the Newport. I have to admit, when I got there I was in no mood to stay for a whole show. But once things got started I knew I would be there until the end. Vinnie already listed some of the highlights, but he forgot one: “(Nothing But) Flowers”, possibly my favorite Talking Heads song, was played by Byrne and his remarkable band. Big thumbs up to the string section. Ah, what a wonderful night.
