In high school, as a young artist, you're the shit. You’re better than anyone else in the school. You win all the local contests, and end up with a scholarship to art school. But it's art school that tears you a new asshole. You're no longer the shit there. That other kid is. The kid who can draw better than everyone. I know six of those kids. All students at the Columbus College of Art and Design. And they just recently had an exhibition of work at the Roy G. Biv Gallery (September 1 - 30) titled New Arrangements. Here's a rundown of the artists, and their work:
- Painter Jason Floyd Lewis showed a handful of well-rendered paintings focusing on a barn, or objects in and around the barn. All of them displayed an insane sensitivity for light and shadow.
- Chi-kit Kwong exhibited delicate, soft renderings of toys (and a pear) surrounded by a strange, abrasive-looking substance. The paintings had a nice balance of opposites-- in both color and texture. His “Farewell, Farewell” was one of my favorite pieces in the exhibition.
- Nathaniel Underwood paints everyday ordinary objects so well it makes you jealous. “Occupy One”, for example, was an egg, some tape and a string on a table. That's it. But it was rendered really well.
- Michael Stillion paints everyday objects also, but in a more stylized way. His brush strokes show up on a few of the canvases, like thick, colorful hatch marks. It reminded me of some early renaissance artists' work I saw in art history class.
- Richard Otten displayed a grab bag of work, mixing both mediums and styles. He seemed to focus more on the shapes of objects relative to their spaces, and abstracted the compositions by doing so.
- And rounding out the exhibition collective was Jacob Dudley. Dudley made four renderings of one lone shell in a vast, empty space. The compositions seemed to focus more on exaggerated light, for the pieces were soft-lit and dreamlike.
Though I personally have no imagery to show you from the exhibition, I will offer myself as a middleman. If you would like to contact the artists to see their work (which I encourage you to do), drop me an email at vinnie@tlchicken.com and I'll use my vast resources to pass the message along.
