The economy is hurting, the summer temperatures are sweltering and everybody’s living check to check. But who gives a fuck? The Soul-Fu Villains have a brand new album out: The Nappy Man's Guide to Living. And if you don't know who the Soul-Fu Villains are, learn now and study hard. I'll be giving a pop quiz when you least expect it. The Nappy Man's Guide to Living is the 12-track way of life for those who like to live it right. They don't just play funk. Or soul. Or live hip-hop. They play what grooves. And you're shaking your ass from the get-go. "Soul Rotation," "Gimme the Word" and "Up" are straight funk at its finest. And if you don't hit the dance floor, know that your lady will. Which could be a problem when track #4, "Deez and Doze," (my favorite track) rolls around. It's so smooth it just might steal her up and take her home. For the rest of the album, the Soul-Fu Villains lay it on ya straight. Play "The Fabric" in a room full of people and watch the laid-back vibe get everyone's head nodding in approval. Try out the soulful, reggae-tinged "U Shouldn't Have 2 Worry" where drummer Los-507 takes over lead vocal duties (and catch the subtle acoustic guitar strumming with it). Watch guest DJ RJ-D2 throw some turntable spice into the fist-pumping "How We Comin'," while Soul-Fu MC Nu#eric makes suckas cry with his microphone. Or dig on the most diverse track, the party-rockin "Do It Up." But like all good things, The Nappy Man's Guide to Living must come to an end. And it does so with "One of These Days." While Los, Nu#eric and vocalist Ian Hooper talk the talk, the rhythm section walks the walk and the horns let you know exactly who's in charge. Take advantage of seeing these cats while you can. Buy the album now. Tell 'em how much you love 'em. Because once word gets out, they'll belong to the whole damn world. Visit them at soul-fu.com to find out how to get a copy of the album.
