HOW DO THE BEST OF 2000 CD PICKS OF AN MTV PERSONALITY COMPARE TO THOSE OF YOUR FAVORITE ASIAN/ITALIAN ONE-TWO PUNCH? READ FOR YOURSELF:
DAVE'S TOP 10 PICKS OF 2000:
DAVID GRAY, WHITE LADDER - At last, an album for people who have completed puberty, and it’s a hit! If it can pound a few nails into the coffin of LimpBizkitSevendustStaindDisturbedLinkinPark, I’ll jump for joy.
COLDPLAY, PARACHUTES - A debut album that sounds like a tenth album. These guys could be the first important band of the 21st Century.
RYAN ADAMS, HEARTBREAKER - The former leader of Whiskeytown makes the perfect winter album. “Come Pick Me Up” is the song J.D. Salinger would have written if he hadn’t been busy seducing college girls.
JOSH ROUSE, HOME - If David Gray makes the world safe for singer/songwriters, people should give this guy a shot. Josh alone onstage with an acoustic guitar will give you chills like all the summer super-tours couldn’t.
FASTBALL, THE HARSH LIGHT OF DAY - The surprise of the year. Sure, I liked “The Way” and “Out Of My Head” as much as the next guy. But who knew they had a classic album in them? Go buy it. Go. Now.
BBMAK, SOONER OR LATER - Not everything on top 40 radio made me want to take hostages this year. BBMAK are the bastard children of Wilson Phillips and The Outfield. (In my world, that’s a huge compliment.)
ELLIOTT SMITH, FIGURE 8 - Why be sad when you can pay someone to do it for you?
PETER SEARCY, COULD YOU PLEASE AND THANK YOU - It’s just as polite as its title suggests, and it rocks. You’re singing along with every song the first time through-- guaranteed. Check him out live if you get the chance.
JAYHAWKS, SMILE - One of my favorite bands rebounds from the departure of former leader Mark Olson. They played one of the best shows I’ve seen in years at Central Park Summerstage.
U2, ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND - Hey, guys! Welcome back from The Planet Where Giant Lemons Are A Good Idea. The first U2 album in a decade that hasn’t made me hit the skip-track button.
WAYNE & VINNIE'S TOP 10 PICKS OF 2000:
LOS AMIGOS INVISIBLES, AREPA 3000 - All the way from Planet Disco, these Venezuelan kings of all that is funky make an album you can’t not be happy hearing. Song of the year? Track 12, “Pipi”.
BLACKALICIOUS, NIA - 2/5 of the ultra brilliant Quannum crew raise the bar to a level that can’t be passed. Beats that shake your ass, and lyrics that whoop on it.
FELA KUTI, THE BEST BEST OF FELA KUTI - Chances are you won’t understand a word on this double-disc set, but who gives a fuck. This is a great collection of the late afro-beat legend. A major influence for a lot of artists.
FISHBONE, THE PSYCHOTIC FRIENDS NUTTWERX - The most slept-on album of 2000, from the most slept-on group around. Fishbone is a living, playing, legendary musical force, and this is the sonic stew that proves it.
DJ Z-TRIP AND RADAR, LIVE AT THE FUTURE PRIMITIVE VOLUME 2 - Remixing everything from Pink Floyd to Doug E. Fresh, this shit has it all. If you want to shake your ass, buy this album.
JURASSIC 5, QUALITY CONTROL - Imagine turntable wizardry, and group harmonies, and clever rhyming, and an overwhelming overall spirit of soul. That’s J5. Absolutely timeless. I’m hooked.
LAIKA, GOOD LOOKING BLUES - Smoother than a baby’s ass and dreamier than Mr. Sandman, Good Looking Blues is a nice break from anything you would hear on the radio.
MORPHINE, THE NIGHT - Last call for the trio from Boston. The Night embodies all things Morphine: it’s dark, moody, and subtle. An amazing album to listen to in the dark. Or at night, for that matter.
MARVIN PONTIAC, THE LEGENDARY MARVIN PONTIAC'S GREATEST HITS - Oh, John Lurie. You clever little scamp. You write such crazy nice blues music, and you use an alias! Is it me, or do all geniuses use aliases?
AIR, THE VIRGIN SUICIDES - Fucked up soundtrack for a fucked up movie based off a fucked up book. The French duo known as Air strikes again with this creepy, yet wonderful, album.
