Traffic is about drug trafficking in America, and how it eats away at the very core of our nation. Steven Soderbergh, director of such films as Out of Sight, Sex Lies & Videotape and Erin Brockovich, lends his unique film style to Stephen Gaghan’s amazing script. This film, like most Soderbergh films, has an all-star cast, including Don Cheadle, Benicio Del Toro, Michael Douglas, Luis Guzman, Dennis Quaid and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Traffic was filmed on location in Washington, D.C., New Mexico and Cincinnati. One scene was also shot at the Capital Building in Columbus. The film is getting critical acclaim. It just won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor for Benicio Del Toro at the New York Film Critics’ Awards. I’m a real fan of Soderbergh’s style. He plans his movies like a painter, using palettes and color schemes to convey characters and locations. Traffic is no exception. Using hand-held cameras and sepia film tones at times, Traffic is extremely visually pleasing. The story drags a bit from time to time, but anyone who likes informative dramas should truly enjoy this look into American drug trafficking.
