A good deal of the staff knows that I am a sucker for conspiracy theories. Who shot JFK? Elvis. What goes on at Area 51? Phyllis Diller Conventions. Has man ever been to the moon? FUCK NO! That’s why I got so fired up when director Bart Sibrel sent a copy of his controversial film, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Moon, to us. I had heard about this film before from our good friend Joe Rogan. Joe really dug this film, so I figured I would, too. Let’s just say that not all of Joe’s tastes parallel all of mine. The idea behind the film is a noble one. And the fact is that they touch base on a few subjects that could prove to be quite convincing. Unfortunately, they only touch base. The 47-minute film borders the bizarre, as it tries to use weirdo analogies when discussing NASA, the landing, or any space event, for that matter. I wanted this film to be cold hard facts; you know, Robert Stack narrated, Unsolved Mysteries type of shit. What I got was a fluff piece narrated by some British woman that sounded like Mary Poppins. There were a few cool items that got my interest: a flag blowing in the “wind” on the moon; multiple light sources; a whiplash shot of the camera person in the “spaceship” trying to film the “Earth” through a spaceship window. But in the end, it just felt like a beginning. I walked away from it feeling that nothing was any more or less resolved than before. If you know a little bit about the subject already, chances are nothing in this film is going to be new to you. But if you know nothing about it, visit moonmovie.com to check it out.
