I have to admit, indie rock is not my thing. The Spock-top, "drown in my bed of tears" approach to life has never interested me. But on with the review. This is a five song EP titled There Is No Beginning To The Story, so I'm going to take it one track at a time.
“From A Balance Beam” - Color me shocked! I'm used to indie rock bands burying everything beneath mounds of crunching guitar riffs. But this song is wide open and well arranged. Plus, I'm a sucker for weirdo-tape recorder snippets on albums. Hence my collection of LaBouche LPs.
“Messenger Bird's Song” - Aak! This is what I expect from this genre of music. The vocalist is crying into his soymilk chai because some girl's giving him the runaround. I wouldn't put up with that shit long enough to reach the crying stage, so obviously, I can't relate. Hence me being single.
“We Are Free Men” - Not only does this track bring back the nice, layered buildup of instruments, but it also throws some female vocals into the mix. The creepy tape recorder girl even makes a comeback. I dig that kinda stuff. Hence my affinity for the Girls Gone Wild audiotape series.
“Loose Leaves” - Here’s the happy, upbeat song. It's so damned catchy, by the time your bitterness reflex kicks in, the track's already over. And all you're left with is this silly, warm-hearted feeling in the back of your throat. Hence my absentee soul making a comeback of its own.
? - Um, there isn't really a song here. Just more tape recorded stuff and ambient sounds. It's just over a minute long, but a nice way to wrap things up. Hence me being done with this review.
