As August reaches its auspicious twilight, folks around town are fraught with resolution on having one last summer adventure. Too often the demands of the modern world have us putting off the things that create memories. The folks at the Columbus Women's Bike Club would like to invite you to join them in trying to squeeze one last drop of fun out of summer. They will be holding their first Race-4-Fun on Saturday August 24 at Goodale Park.
Founded in 1999, the Columbus Women's Bike Club has been a social and recreational haven for members of the community who prefer to ride women's bikes. The Race-4-Fun was developed to help bring about awareness and interest in the club.
"A lot of times I'll see guys riding down the street on women's bikes, and I'll approach them and tell them about the club,” said club vice president Larry Murphy. Some of them don't even know they’re riding women's bikes! They just know they love the feel and smooth styling that only a woman's bike can provide."
"Growing up I always rode my sister's Schwinn. I always felt that society was shunning me. But then I found these guys," said member Chris Donaldson.
Having the club has not always been easy. Unfortunate stereotypes have been formed about the club's members.
"They think we're a bunch of perverts, but nothing could be further from the truth. There's nothing sexual about this at all. We're just like any other club. But the one thing that bonds us all is our love of the smooth, classic styling of a women's bike. Look at the dropped frame; it's a thing of beauty,” said Murphy.
If all goes well, the Columbus Women's Bike Club hopes to make this a yearly event.
