I had never been to a Guns N’ Roses concert before. I played the shit out of Appetite for Destruction-- until I saw the “Welcome to the Jungle” video. Hated them ever since. Never thought I would care about them again. Then Axl reforms the band with Robin Finck from Nine Inch Nails, and Buckethead. I'm sure most of you know who Buckethead is by now. It used to be that only a handful of people knew who Buckethead was, and we liked it that way. Never in a million years did we think he would join a band
like G'N'R. The night started with an opening band named CKY (the new Calvin Klein uni-sex cologne). Not bad. They kinda rocked. Mix Master Mike was up next. Mike, the turntables are not an instrument. Playing other people's albums and going “wicky-wicky” so one word repeats is not the same as playing original music, so fuck off! And then Guns N’ Roses took the stage.
Here's what might surprise you about Guns N’ Roses:
1. AXL COULD ACTUALLY SING -
He was even hitting the right notes.
2. HE WAS SELF-DEPRECATING - He made a joke about the OSU riots.
Here's what might not surprise you:
1. AXL IS INSANE -
At one point between songs, you could actually hear him over the PA system say, “Hmm,.. marshmallows. I forgot about them.”
2. HIS NEW BAND IS AMAZING - The sad part is that they only get to be a G'N'R cover band. They played two new songs off the never-to-be-released Chinese Democracy, but everything else was a greatest hit. Two of the best guitar players out there, and they have to play Slash's crappy solos note for note. It is sad.
Hopefully Axl will have a Howard Hughes-style breakdown soon, and Robin and Buckethead will form an amazing band worthy of their talents. Until then, this is the only way you'll get to see these two amazing musicians.
