We all have guilty pleasures. For some, it's watching soap operas. For others, it’s owning the entire collection of Ron Popeil infomercials, and using his buzz words like “set it and forget it” in your daily conversations. For me, it’s blasting "Hakuna Matada" on my car stereo and singing aloud at the top of my lungs during rush hour. To each his own, I guess.
You would, therefore, understand my excitement upon news of The Lion King being re-released to the IMAX Theater chain. This would also mark the first time I would ever go to an IMAX Theater, which also added to my growing excitement. Unfortunately, I arrived a little late to the showing. This meant I had to sit in the front row. Not the best place to see a film that’s six stories tall. After a little self promotion about the wonders of this special theater, the show was on. Holy crap, it was gigantic. I swear to God, Simba’s asshole was bigger than my whole body. I just remember thinking to myself, “My God. This must be how a gerbil feels. I hope Richard Gere isn’t in the audience.”
The over-all presentation is pretty damn cool. The immense size, for the most part, further emphasizes textural elements that are completely unnoticeable on television, and the line quality at this magnitude also is affected. No longer does it appear smooth and pristine; it now has a more hand-drawn pencil quality. I find it quite enjoyable.
Of course all these bells and whistles are very impressive, but The Lion King still stands on its own as one of my favorite animated films. It has a terrific story, fantastic animation, and superb voice talent. Especially Jeremy Irons, who plays the malignant, emaciated villain, Scar. The way he says “naughty little boy” just gives me the vapors each and every time.
The Lion King at IMAX Theaters offers a great movie with a fantastic presentation. What more could I ask for,.. besides a bottle of aspirin for my sore neck.
