TULSA, OK - With the holiday season but a mere memory again, agricultural and livestock analysts are once again baffled at the sudden drop in turkey futures.
\"We\'ve got all these guys out here, and this is,.. I mean, this is their whole life! These guys eat, sleep, and breathe turkeys. Not literally,.. I mean,.. well you know what I mean. They work so hard raising turkeys all year long. But as soon as their work begins paying off big time, they hit another slump,\" said Dean Deene, an independent agricultural analyst.
It seems that no matter what effort the farmers put forth, their year-end production levels have always failed. From the novelty frozen turkey on a stick, to the “Hey, There\'s A Turkey In My Pocket!” (portable turkey aimed at young people on the run), nothing has piqued post-holiday interest. The beef and chicken industry has never been plagued with this dilemma, and their production rates stay level throughout the year.
\"My mortgage was due last week, and Louis Rich hadn\'t placed an order in three weeks,” said Ervil Martin, a turkey farmer of 32 years. “I was strapped. Four months ago they were calling everyday. Now the phone stands solemnly still, a monument to halted industrial progress. I went and asked Dean why no one wanted to savor my delicate and tender turkeys anymore. A tear swelled up in his eye. The only thing he could let past his massive tear levee was the words, ‘I don\'t know, Ervil. I just don’t know.’ Then the levee broke.\"
