King\'s X is a band who has been around for 20 years, inspiring musicians everywhere, and amassing a loyal cult of followers. Perpetually on the verge of breaking through, King\'s X is a band that anyone could love. To the uninitiated, King\'s X is a three-piece band from Houston, Texas, and features soulful vocals supported by Beatles-esque back-ups over drop-tuned thick riffs. If you\'re familiar with the band, you will recognize their sound as having been lifted and used by bands everywhere (Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam, to name a few). The problem that I believe has always plagued the band is their difficulty in being categorized; a fact that was supported by the variety of bands that opened for them when I saw them. First we had a Social Distortion-meets-Dave Matthews frat band, followed by a bunch of old guys playing Jimi Hendrix covers. We finished up with a sloppy Blink-182-meets-Slipknot pseudo-metal band. Everyone was as confused as I. After the confusion, King\'s X hit the stage, and believe me, you\'d never know it was just three guys playing. Doug Pinnick sang lead for most of the set, while expertly playing a bass slung down to his knees. Ty Tabor also sang lead on a handful of tunes, tearing up the room with the best guitar tone you\'ll ever hear. He also sang back-up the whole time. Keeping the whole thing tighter than a Joan Rivers face-lift was Jerry Gaskill, who is not only one of the best drummers out there, but a mean back-up vocalist as well. These guys are one of the tightest bands you\'ll ever have the pleasure of seeing live. They have a new disc due out soon, but you can\'t go wrong with Manic Moonlight or any of the previous seven albums. Each one could find itself on endless repeat in your CD player. Simply put, King\'s X are, and have been, the future of music. They are just waiting for you to figure it out.
