This month’s toy set depicts an all time classic: The Twilight Zone episode “Eye Of The Beholder”, also known as the episode with “pig people dudes in doctor outfits,” as the store clerk put it when I bought it. The set, brought to you by Sideshow Toys, contains the 12” tall, malformed Doctor, and equally messed up Nurse from the episode. Sideshow Toys sixth-scale dolls are usually outstanding, but nothing prepared me for this set. To put it precisely, it is fan-frickin’-tastic (with emphasis on the “frickin’”). The sculpting of their faces, performed by artist Mat Falls, wonderfully captures not only the ‘60s make-up, but also an appropriate facial expression to boot. The Doctor might be misshapen, but he has a very compassionate expression taken directly from the end of the episode. Equally, the nurse has a very subtle, apprehensive expression, as if she is slowly trying to sneak a peek at a “disfigured” patient. The paint at first appears very simple, however, a lot of care was directed toward both of their eyes. The pupils and eyelids have been carefully painted, and they’re finished off with a gloss coat to make them seem alive. There is even a dark wash around each eye to make them appear more sunken. Every great head needs a good body (God knows I know), and each creepy hospital attendant sports a spiffy, highly articulate body. The outfits on the show were very basic hospital clothes, yet Sideshow still did a great job constructing them while adding a few little touches. The doctors shirt has neat little buttons and pockets sewn on. He even has removable shoes with socks. The nurse isn’t too shabby either, with her simple, yet elegant, faux pearl buttons, and silky smooth pantyhose that boldly seem to scream, “Take me, take me, take me to the Ice Capades!” They both come with a nice assortment of accessories, ready to mangle a patient to their distinction of beauty. Each comes with their own base, but you also get a stethoscope, syringe, pack of gauze, and a watch.
With such a nice set, could I have a complaint? Unfortunately, yes. I’m not sure. I could be mistaken, but last time I watched The Twilight Zone, wasn’t it filmed in black-and-white? So, why on earth would you paint these things in color? Given the fact that Sideshow has done multiple black-and-white figures of the Universal monsters with great success, it really doesn’t make sense. By painting them in gray tones, it would have made these already weird figures that much more grotesque. Oh well, nothing is perfect I guess. Still, if you are a fan of the show, you owe it to yourself to pick up a set today.
