I\'m convinced Scott Herren is a real life incarnation of Dr. Frankenstein. I mean, under the pseudonym Prefuse 73, he\'s a DJ,.. a musician. But what he does is nothing short of frightening genius. And although he isn\'t harvesting raw materials from the dead, he\'s still selecting organs and bones from a variety of sources, then mixing and matching as he sees fit. Jarring explosions of urban lyricism crash headlong into utopian landscapes of pure electronic groove. The thunder of drum and bass overcomes, then gives way, for the soothing rays of blunted jazz. And when all the melding is done, the sound transcends all the elements of what composes it. It becomes a completely different beast, something akin to DJ Cam, Aphex Twin, or U.N.K.L.E.. And that\'s why I think Prefuse 73 is a real life Frankenstein of music. Because he\'s digging for parts of all these different sound mediums and genres, piecing them together, then sending a few thousand volts through the structure, bringing them out the other end as a brand-new lifeform.
As a part of his traveling road show, Prefuse 73 will be exhibiting his creation this Saturday, May 24th, at The Wexner Center For The Arts in Columbus, Ohio. For more info, go to prefuse73.com and wexarts.org.
