I am a sucker for great harmonies, and the guys from Ambulance Ltd. have them in spades. We received a five-song, self-titled EP from them that is really great. The problem is that it is just five songs long.
Each track seems to point to a slightly different direction that the band could follow, and each direction is very compelling. Track one, \"Stay Where You Are\", is a nice, poppy, jazzy slice, with Beck meets Lou Reed vocals floating across swirling, reverb-soaked hollow-bodied guitars. While track three, \"Heavy Lifting\", touches on some of the great atmospheres of My Bloody Valentine, but with a power pop topping. The tune ends with a beautiful, finger-picked guitar, and a piano outro that takes you by surprise. \"Helmsman\", track four, has a little more of a wild side to it, showing that the boys in Ambulance Ltd. aren\'t afraid of dragging their great pop songwriting into a Sonic Youth-style cacophony, if the mood strikes them. Finishing up with \"Young Urban\", a song that reminds me of the under-appreciated Kevin Tihista, Ambulance Ltd. has crafted a great EP that should leave you begging for more.
They have a great loose vibe, like you\'re hearing them live. The songs live and breathe without being squashed by heavy-handed studio production. Maybe the full-length will solidify the direction the band wants to follow,.. or maybe it will just show these guys stretching their wings further and further on each song. Either way, you better believe I\'ll be waiting to check it out.
