The whole time I was checking out Comalies by Lacuna Coil I was waiting for it to really kick in. Combining male and female lead vocals seems to be a great way of pushing boundaries; for creating new sonic soundscapes. I mean, look at what Roxette did! Unfortunately, Lacuna Coil play it safe almost the entire disc.
They have a sound not too far removed from current radio darlings, Evanescence. Unfortunately, they also suffer some of their same problems: too many songs sound the same on this disc, and Lacuna Coil often slips into that nu-metal sound that makes me fall asleep. The band also doesn\'t seem to know when to quit playing. They stack guitar on top of chugging guitar, with outdated synth sounds over the top. The vocals, by Cristina Scabbia, are the best thing about this band. Unfortunately, they are buried under all the playing. The songs are never given a chance to breathe. I\'d love to hear what she\'s capable of when released from these chains-- or not! Raaawr!
If you like the band Evanescence and can\'t get enough, this disc will probably be right up your alley. But I\'m looking for something a little more. Like Roxette!
