There are always a lot of young people in The Price is Right crowd, with their matching college t-shirts, being all rowdy and shit. But on this particular day it seemed like it was extra rowdy. The first four people are called down to contestants' row, and there’s one kid that looks just like Jim Breuer in Half Baked. He’s got the tie-dyed t-shirt, big hemp necklace, messed up hair and all. They’re supposed to bid on some piece of furniture or something, and the Jim Breuer kid bids $420. But Bob Barker doesn’t hear him because he’s a thousand years old, so he repeats, "420?" The crowd goes nuts, because Bob Barker just said "420". So the Jim Breuer kid wins his curio cabinet or whatever.
Then, the next contestant gets called down. It’s some college frat boy. When it’s his turn to bid, he bids $69. Except, again, Bob Barker can’t hear him, so he repeats, "What? 69?" I shit myself, because Bob Barker just said "69".
Frat boy wins, and it’s still all young people in contestant’s row. Rod Roddy calls the next name. It’s Henrietta. Henrietta is the only person in the building older than Bob Barker. She takes 20 minutes to get down to contestants' row. She’s the cutest little old lady in the history of time. People start yelling, "Yeah, Henrietta!" They're trying to give her high-fives. Henrietta finally gets down to her seat, and Bob Barker starts to chit-chat with her. We find out that she’s here for her 50th wedding anniversary. The crowd goes "awww", and the camera pans up to Henrietta’s husband in the audience. I swear to God, I’m not making this up: Henrietta’s husband has a hook. Like, where his hand should be, there’s a hook. He waves his hook, and the crowd goes wild.
Fast-forward to a little later. Henrietta has won a red convertible for her 50th wedding anniversary, and now she’s ready to spin the big wheel with Jim Breuer and frat boy. Usually, when a contestant doesn’t get the wheel all the way around, the audience boos him. Poor frail Henrietta didn’t get it all the way around. In fact, I’m surprised she didn’t break a hip in the process. But the audience doesn’t boo her-- they rally! They start shouting, "That’s okay, Henrietta!" Even Bob Barker doesn’t chastise her. He helps her spin the wheel again, and it lands on $1. I thought she was going to drop dead from excitement, but she’s okay. They show another shot of her husband waving his hook with pride.
So Henrietta winds up in the Showcase Showdown with some other college student. She can barely see over the microphone stand. Our girl Henrietta has already won a convertible, and here she wins another car and, like, a hot-air balloon ride over Taiwan or something. She’s the champion. Her husband with the hook comes up to the stage, and all of Barker’s Beauties fawn over him. Bob Barker reminds us to help control the pet population.
It was the best damn episode of The Price Is Right I ever saw.
