Okay. So, a Moby album, a Groove Armada album, and a St. Germain album meet in a bar. The St. Germain album slips some GHB into the Moby and Groove Armada album’s drinks while they're powdering their noses. Then the St. Germain album convinces them to go back to “his place.” They end up having a crazy, hardcore, three-way fuckfest. Nine months later, out pops a kid.
And they name it Praful (pronounced Pra-Fool).
And that’s exactly what Praful’s new album, One Day Deep, sounds like. It sounds like the bastard son of a hundred maniacs! No, wait. That was Freddy Krueger. Or was that Freddie Mercury? Either way, it’s Praful.
Most of the tracks are ambient, utilizing horns, like sax and flute, to emphasize the jazzy aspect of the work. Praful studied music in Amsterdam, but traveled extensively through Brazil and India. So some of the music is extremely worldy, reminiscent of Mali Music by Damon Albarn. And Praful has his hand in many different projects. He formed a dance group called Project 2000 in the late Nineties, but he’s also an accomplished instrumentalist, as well as a composer and member of Bayuba Cante, an international band that mixes Afro-Cuban roots with flamenco, rhumba, Indian music, funk, and jazz. He has dabbled in a plethora of genres, and each one of those influences shines through in One Day Deep.
I can do without the more “clubby” tracks, like “Corpo Suado”. But tracks like “Sonhar”, “Let The Chips Fall”, and “Teardrop Butterfly” are just a few of the redeeming factors of the album.
If you’re looking for something different, something that can’t easily be categorized and written off, check out One Day Deep. If you’re more of the Top 40 influence, avoid it like the plague. It’s bigger than that. It’s not a perfect album, for sure. But it’s a nice break from the norm, and a great attempt at something different.
