Ten reasons why Irish singer/songwriter Damien Rice should kick my ass.
1. Because his debut album, O (Vector Records), was released in the US on June 3rd, but I didn’t get a chance to review it until now.
2. Because I really love this album, yet I reviewed a ton of shitty music BEFORE even touching O.
3. Because I lack the creative wit and energy right now to make up some brilliant comparison, so I’ll just dip into typical reviewer references and compare him to Ben Harper.
4. Because although this has been one of my favorite albums yet this year, I probably won’t listen to it often, because of how soothing and mellow it is. It’s that relaxing and satisfying.
5. Because he wins me over with elements that I have, in the past, referred to as “gimmicky”; like opera singers and female back-up vocals.
6. Because he’s been releasing music since September 2001, yet it took me nearly two years to find out about him.
7. Because he will probably never get a dime of my money. I received the album for free to review, and if he ever comes around on tour, I would more than likely be placed on the media list. Although, I would have gladly paid full price for both the album and a performance.
8. Because I can’t pick one stand-out, must-hear song from O. They are all that goddamn good.
9. Because I’m writing the review for O this way, as opposed to giving the reader a comprehensive and in-depth critique of Damien and his work.
10. Because, in the end, he’s way fucking cooler and more talented than I can ever hope to be.
