Remember the first time you heard Jane’s Addiction, and it struck you that you couldn’t pigeonhole those cats as a plain ol’ rock band, because they were doing all kinds of crazy shit with percussion and violins and such? That’s what this is like. Except Jane’s Addiction are pretty untouchable, musically speaking.
Not that the young dudes from World Leader Pretend aren’t pretty goddamn good with their respective instruments. What do they play? Lots of shit. Want a good idea of how it sounds? Take five stereos, place them in the same room, and simultaneously play some Radiohead, some Beck (not the funky stuff), some U2 (when they were taking Ecstasy and making all that weirdo electronica music), and then play two completely different NPR stations. That’s what this feels like. Musically schizophrenic youngsters playing whatever the hell they feel like playing, and well.
Stand-out songs? It’s kind of irrelevant here. They’re not gonna be a hit single kind of band. These kids are gonna need you to be buying their albums and loving them in their entirety.
Occasional lull aside, Fit for Faded is worth listening to once if you dig the aforementioned bands. Or if you’re doing Wayne’s work for him, like me.
