What can I say in this review of a rock band pushing the SoCal sound that I haven't said before? Hmmm,.. I could mention that these guys aren't from California. Rather, they hail from Miami, Florida. Or I could go on and on about how, at times, the lead singer from Glasseater sounds like a punk rock DeBarge. I could talk about how all the songs on their new release from Victory Records start to blend together after awhile. Hmmm,.. what to do, what to do?
Alright. I've got it:
Everything Is Beautiful When You Don't Look Down is what it is. It's a modern SoCal punk rock album, complete with drum beats and baselines that plow right into your stomach. It's got the heartfelt lyrics and vocals that dig into your head with a catchy, nasal-born hook. There's even the obligatory "hardcore growl" on a few of the songs. Fierce, indeed. Honestly, the way these guys wield their instruments, the sound comes charging out of your speaker like Ricki Lake at a seafood buffet. Thing is, seconds into each track, their Ricki Lake of sound simply melts into a Karen Carpenter, passes on every dish, and heads straight for the toilet. Right when it feels like Glasseater is about to knock me on my ass in Snapcase fashion, they just stop and settle into this trademark sound that would make them the kings of the soundtrack for Grind. And while there's obviously a crowd for that sound (hence the churning out of movies like Grind), and I'm sure that crowd will be rocked by this album and Glasseater's live tour in support of it, I think I'm gonna have to sit this one out.
How'd that sound?
