Never judge a band by their size. Shortie's Worthless Smiles is a disc that will grow on you. It's a nice balance of post-hardcore, post-punk rock, post-something else with melodic, pop-influenced, hook-filled choruses. It's nice to hear a band that I don't automatically lump in with a scene or genre. Shortie has their own sound.
Worthless Smiles is a solid outing that starts strong with the rocking "5 Seconds", and keeps it up until the only slight misstep, "Reaction Time". But they quickly recover and kick out the jams. From the deftones-influenced screaming of "Sometimes", on through the rest of the disc. They solidified my appreciation for their album by closing it out with a wonderfully snotty version of Portishead's Sour Times.
Lead vocalist Pogus has an original voice with the ability to capture the rebellious attitude of punk and hardcore while retaining melody and tone. Solid bass work by Kyle Klima and atypical guitar work by Alan and Pag are locked into place by the driving rhythm of drummer Justin Halladay. You can feel the evolution of this band happening within the span of this disc.
Shortie will be one of the bands to watch in the future, if they keep up the mature progression they've captured on this disc.
