Beyond the clouds and the moon, amid the stars and the sky, there existed The Man Who Walked Between The Heavens. For countless eons, the Being strode about the universe investigating its many marvels.
At one point, He came across the Earth. He observed the great variety of creatures that lived on the land and in the water. He observed the great variety of plants that swayed in the breeze. He observed the many rocks and minerals that bejeweled the land.
Finally, he said unto the many creatures, "I have crossed many galaxies and seen many worlds, but never have I seen as many different creatures on a world as there are here. My travels have become lonely, and seeing all of you has made me long for a companion. Would any of you see so fit as to join me about the universe?"
First, the lion replied to Him, "Not I, for I have the entirety of the plains to claim as my own."
Then the fish replied, "No, thank you, for I have the wonders of the ocean to keep my interest."
Next, a small mole spoke up. "Good Sir, I have only tiny claws and a fat body. I am small in stature compared to the lion, and my eyesight is poor compared to the fish. It may be that I have little to keep me occupied here, and so I choose to go with you."
"Thank you very much, small mole," The Man Who Walked Between The Heavens replied. He extended his hand down through the clouds to the ground, and said to the small mole, "Climb upon my palm. I shall bring you up to ride on my shoulder."
The mole did so, and began to rise into the air on the Being's hand. As the mole was raised higher and higher, though, the air began to thin. When the Being's hand had cleared the clouds, The Man Who Walked Between The Heavens realized that the mole had suffocated. This caused Him to mourn by the Earth for a very long time.
Meanwhile, the other moles of Earth had seen what had happened to their brother, however had not heard the conversation between the two. They all became very frightened that the same fate may befall them. This caused them to burrow under the ground so that the giant could not reach down and pick them up off of the surface.
As long as the Being clung to the Earth mourning, the moles stayed underground. This upset Him even more. He realized now that he had not only killed one small mole, but had driven the rest of them underground. He decided then and there that he would leave Earth and never return.
His departure came too late, for the mole's eyesight had now gotten even worse from the constant darkness of the underground. When they peeked out their heads, they could no longer see far enough in front of them to notice if The Man Who Walked Between The Heavens was still there. So, just to be safe, they remain underground, even to this day.
