Not only is Doug Martsch an indie rock icon, he's also a king found within a schizophrenic's mind. Although one's space-time can get distorted at times, Built To Spill played the Metro in Chicago on September 17th, according to our standard linear time, which society created.
Messages found deep in our unconscious are torn from our interior center of the universe by Martsch's lyrics. He calls all dreamers to come out and play. They are awakened to the lives of others, and realities collide. The musical sound of Built To Spill enters our bloodstream and opens up the bowling alleys of our veins.
The lyrics and sounds create an overall sense of surrealism. Built To Spill began to remind me of royalty, with drummer Scott Plouf's beautiful porcelain looking drum set. I look around at the crowd and picture them all as spirits of persecuted witches who have found the next plane upon which to live. On this plane, this crowd no longer fears an unfair trial for understanding the way the world works, but shares the ability to change what you know how to work through their collective effervescence.
The show was a break in reality,.. but whose reality? Living within one's own dreamworld fed by the music of indie rock leaders, or waking to have either a tall guy in front of you or a drunk girl rub up against you during a Built To Spill show?
