Warning: This book may fill you with the urge to punch stupid people in the head.
Set in the not-distant-enough future, the story revolves around the Feed, which is a much sought after computer chip and fashion accessory, prized by most of the world who can afford one. It does all the important things for you; helps you shop, allows you to instant message with all your friends, listen to music, and drive your car with nothing more than thought. It also influences every move you make, and tracks your buying purchases even closer than the Internet and credit card companies do now. It also makes you terribly stupid, and dependency upon the Feed has all but destroyed the English language.
The Earth is poisoned beyond repair, and interstellar travel is something rich kids do as a matter of fact. The book's two main characters, Titus and Violet, meet at a party on the moon where they fall in love. Shortly after, they are assailed by a terrorist organization whose intent is to "wake people up". Titus and Violet's Feed chips malfunction, and after an awkward week of not knowing what to think or what to do, Titus gets his back. Violet does not. Titus, even before the attack, was the stereotypical teenager, obsessed with material possessions and having fun. Violet becomes more aware of the world around her, and becomes more and more a pariah for her use of big words and weird thoughts.
It's a frustrating read. The author confesses to reading a lot of Teen, Cosmo, and Maxim magazines when he wrote it, and the sugary language shows through. It's a very believable, if not dark and depressing, future.
