You know, I have to admit that since I moved out of Columbus, I really haven't missed much about it. Oh, don't get me wrong; I miss our dear Columbus readers. But the city itself? Nah. Not really. Why would I?
Well, I'll tell you why I would. Because The Wexner Center has two kick-ass shows coming up. Two kick-ass shows that, as far as I know, my current hometown is NOT getting.
First, turntablist extraordinaire Kid Koala brings his Short Attention Span Theater to The Wex on Friday, October 10th. Is it music? Well, yeah, it is. But it's so much more than that, too. Koala will perform material from his upcoming new CD, Some Of My Best Friends Are DJs. And joining Kid will be DJ P-Love and DJ Jester, forming a turntable trio that will provide the soundtrack for 30-second animated shorts directed by filmmaker Monkmus. Sensory overload doesn't even begin to describe what this night will provide you with.
And then, as if that weren't enough to fill your October, jazz pianist Jason Moran will make his Columbus debut at The Wex on Friday, October 17th. Moran's Bandwagon trio features bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits, and the tour is to help promote his recently released live CD, The Bandwagon. Already an amazing pianist and composer at the age of 28, Moran has topped jazz charts with his debut for Blue Note, Soundtrack to Human Motion. And my personal favorite, Facing Left from 2000, is simply amazing. If you are a jazz enthusiast, or just a fan of good music, get your ass off your recliner, and get on down to experience Moran.
If I were still in Columbus, I know I'd be spending many an October night at The Wexner Center. If you end up going, please let me know how it was.
